Our Story

The rich history of Muhammad Khan Haveli, built in the 1920s.

Muhammad Khan Haveli has stood in Kot Pehlwan for over a century, built in the classic brick-and-red-sandstone idiom of the subcontinent — deep arcaded verandas, latticed jharokas, hand-carved Chinioti doors and sprawling open courtyards.

What began as the restoration of a family home became something bigger: a personal passion project to save a piece of Pakistan's architectural heritage from time, and to open its doors — to historians, artists, storytellers and anyone who loves what our craftsmen once built by hand.

Chinioti Doors

Solid wooden doors carved by the master craftsmen of Chiniot, brought in when the haveli was first built — floral relief, iron studding and joinery that's rarely made by hand today.

Latticed jaali balconies that catch light differently through the day, casting shifting patterns across the courtyard floor below.

Brick & Sandstone

Locally-fired brick and red sandstone, laid in the original pattern and left in its weathered, sun-warmed tone rather than restored to a false shine.

Arches & Courtyards

Every archway is a frame — onto a courtyard, a garden, or the next wing of the haveli — a rhythm repeated throughout the compound.

The Grounds

Resident peacocks roam the courtyards.

Beyond the architecture, the haveli's gardens are home to a pair of resident peacocks — an unscripted touch of colour and movement that no production designer could add in post.

They wander freely between the arched doorways and sunlit courtyards, part of what makes this feel like a living home rather than a preserved museum piece.

Verandas & interiors

Deep colonnaded verandas wrap the courtyards, furnished with cane chairs, daybeds and sofas — much as they've always been. Guests, artists and film crews alike are welcome to sit a while.
